Traditionally, ladies (followers) dance Tango in heels while the men (leaders) wear flat shoes. Tango shoes with heels for followers are designed to keep the follower's weight forward over the balls of the feet, in proper Tango position. However, I have seen the Tango danced and enjoyed in all types of footwear. For me, flats provide stability when leading and I do enjoy following in my high-heel Tango shoes as well as my dance sneakers.
Whatever shoes you choose, please make sure they are comfortable and do not have rubber soles. Tango involves many pivots and turns, which are made more difficult when wearing rubber or sticky-soled shoes. Dance sneakers are not rubber-soled. They have synthetic soles.
